My people ๐ค๐ค๐ Hope you are all holding up well. Today we are doing a very sensitive topic and I would wish to get your feedback on the comment box.
Can I call it an op-ed article?
Well, a friend of mine asked me to do an article on dark skinned girls ๐. Why not?! I decided to do some research within my circle and I got some tangible feedback that I will be sharing in part 2 of this article.
You may have come across the famous Beyonce's song called "Brown Skin girl'' A song that uplifts dark skinned women and mentions the likes of Lupita Nyong'o. It evokes such an untamed and intuitive display of arrogance and insecurity faced by black women. Our own Sauti Sol did the "Melanin" hit song to appreciate the dark skin woman. Why would celebrities do a campaign to uplift the dark skin woman? Some people would think that the idea of celebrating one kind of beauty innately means disparaging another. Well, do you think so?
In American culture, skin color is portrayed as a binary, you are either light skin or a dark skin. The sad reality is that skin color is a spectrum.
Can we talk about black lives matter for a second? A few days back, we had the slogan 'black lives matter" all over the internet and the keyboard warriors including kina Alex Nderitu invaded the white House from their village in Nyeri๐. I have no problem with the shouting, but I have a problem with how the society has made us believe that the light skin is more beautiful than the black beauties. Lets face the reality here.
In class 3, I admired Albino pupils since I thought they were wazungus. You know how we highly esteemed walami even before meeting them. Just from the stories, they were to be taken as special creatures. There was a myth that their skin is so soft and a pinch led to bleeding ๐ .Well, how that made it admirable I also don't know๐ . You won't believe me if I told you that I had to pinch a mzungu in class 4 to confirm that ๐.
One day, my 6 year old niece came from school and asked her aunt why the rest of the skin wasn't as light as her palm. From the look of things, they could have been discussing about skin colour with other kids and the light skin was appreciated. It took the aunt to keep on reminding her that she got a very beautiful skin and that lifted her self esteem. She is a young adorable dark skin African beauty. I have heard of stories where black girls are called names like 'charcoal', 'blick' or darkness!! There is such a negative connotation to it.
Let me bring you close to home, growing up, I heard comments like, "amepata Bibi msupuu na ni kalight skin", "the baby is so cute, he is a light skin". We subconsciously said it that way until it became part of us. The society has made many stupid things normal. For instance, the connection that dark girls are automatically ugly because God created them dark. The fact is, no matter who you are, YOU ARE SO BEAUTIFUL. Don't you ever let anyone, not even the society make you think that you are ugly! Disclaimer, I have no issue with light skin, we are all beautiful in a great way๐๐♥️.
I will be doing part 2 of this and I will be sharing some feedback from people ๐. I wish I could hear from you and I can as well share your experiences or someone you know ๐. Comment below!
